How does your diet affect your skin?

Sugar, carbohydrates and acne? Oh my! Once considered unrelated, dermatologists at Baylor College of Medicine said research finds certain foods can cause acne to flare up.

“While there are definitely a number of triggers for acne, the connection between diet and acne is very interesting,” said Dr. Rajani Katta. professor of dermatology at Baylor.

Katta pointed to a 12-week study where participants ate low-glycemic index foods and found during this time their acne improved significantly.

Dr. Ramsey Markus, associate professor of dermatology at Baylor, said foods high in refined carbohydrates set off a domino effect where hormones fluctuate, oil glands are stimulated and ultimately acne is aggravated.

Additionally, Markus said dairy products, especially low-fat milk, have been linked to acne.
