Changes can be challenging. The transition for a doctor working in a clinical practice to a career in research is no exception.

Hardeep Singh, MD, MPH, associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine and chief of the Health Policy, Quality and Informatics Program at the Houston Veterans Affairs Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, has first-hand knowledge.

While he started his career as a clinician, today Singh is considered an expert in electronic health record-related patient safety issues and diagnostic errors.

He recently spoke with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services about the transition from the clinic to research.

“It’s important to find training programs that can support innovation, create the right mentorship environments, and are collaborative. Quality and safety touch upon so many fields in addition to medicine, such as human factors, informatics, cognitive science, and social sciences, and it takes a multidisciplinary approach to be successful,” Singh said.
