Healthy Habits: Dr. Jennifer Bump meditates, reads to stay relaxed and focused

Taking care of your health is a priority and nobody knows that more than physicians and healthcare providers.

It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Jennifer Bump, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor, shares some of her healthy habits with us.

Q: What health decisions start your day?                                       
A: I usually start the day off with some sort of meditation or prayer to get my focus and mood right.

Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?                hh-bump-photo
A: Greek yogurt or cheese with a piece of fruit.

Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: Elliptical.

Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout?
A: Trying to push myself to do just a little bit better (faster/longer) than the last time.

Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: Walking and taking the stairs.

Q: What is your favorite healthful snack?
A: A green apple.

Q: Do you take vitamins and if so, which ones?
A: Not as often as I should, but when I do – a multivitamin.

Q: What do you include in your child’s lunch?
A: Fruit, a vegetable, a sandwich, a drink (milk/juice/water) and sometimes a treat (cookie, etc.)

Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy (healthy substitutions)?
A: I will sometimes trade out regular flour for whole wheat, low-fat milk for whole, etc.

Q: What is your nighttime skin regimen?
A: Wash, toner, moisturize.

Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: Reading, watching TV, going to the movies, taking a hot bath or cuddling with my kids and husband.

Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: Salata.

Q: Do you use a pedometer or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal?
A: I used to use a FitBit, but I can’t find my charger!  When I did, my goal was 10,000 steps.

Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: Stress is not good for you. Talk it out!
