Healthy Habits: Daily goal to raise your heart rate

It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Despite staying busy as the director of Baylor’s Human Genome Sequencing Center, Dr. Richard Gibbs tells us how he finds time to stay active and healthy in his daily life.

Q: What healthy decisions start your day?
A: Exercise first thing!

Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?
A: Oatmeal

Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: Bicycling

Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout? (music, tv, phone call, etc.)
A: The certainty that without exercise things would be much worse!

Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: Short cardiac sprints

Q: What is your favorite healthy snack?
A: Nuts

Q: What do you include in your child’s lunch?
A: Always one piece of fruit

Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy (healthy substitutions?)
A: Reduce the carbs and fats

Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: Reading non-fiction/history

Q: Do you use a pedometer or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal?
A: No – but get heart rate up every day.

Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: Don’t eat late at night
