Okay, so maybe this group of students isn’t actually a singing group, but they did get the opportunity to break bread with “the champion” in 1974.

There is no doubt Dr. Michael E. DeBakey had a profound impact on cardiology, surgical innovation and medical education. An innovative mind that created and refined procedures considered standard surgery today, this Throwback Thursday we take a look back at Dr. DeBakey the educator.

Courtesy of the Baylor College of Medicine Archives and the 1974 Aesculapian Yearbook, here is a glimpse of DeBakey spending time with students following a breakfast.

In the Baylor College of Medicine history book “The Quest for Excellence Baylor College of Medicine, 1900-2000″, Chief Science Editor Ruth SoRelle, M.P.H., writes:

“Dr. DeBakey proved to be an outstanding and demanding teacher of medical students. ‘When I was a student, he was always a nice guy,’ said Dr. (George) Alexander. ‘He came in and gave good lectures. He expected you to know what there was to know.’”

Dr. DeBakey helped create a culture at the College that is still felt today. Have a professor that inspires or inspired you? Share it below in the comment section.
