Ways to stay healthy at work

ExercisingMany of us spend the majority of our days sitting in an office chair at our desks in front of our computers.

For usually about eight hours straight, we get very little physical activity. Plus, it can be challenging to plan out healthy daytime meals and snacks while at work.

Today’s theme of National Public Health Week is Creating a Healthy Workplace.

One way that BCM helps keep employees happy and healthy is providing a gym that employees can use before, during, or after the workday. But whether or not your office includes a gym, there are ways that you can make sure you’re staying healthy at work.

Dr. John Foreyt, professor of medicine and director of the Behavioral Medicine Research Center at BCM, advocates walking as a convenient, easy way to exercise that will improve our health.

Try walking for 15-30 minutes during your lunch break every day, if possible. It’s sure to improve your health and your mood. (And ladies – don’t forget to bring walking shoes so you can switch your heels for more comfortable footwear while you walk!)

Kristi King, registered dietitian with Baylor College of Medicine, suggests ways to eat healthily when your career is keeping you busy.

For example, keep healthy foods at your desk for a quick lunch when you’re especially busy, such as canned tuna (in water) and fresh fruit. Consider using a crockpot—you’ll come home to a delicious and nutritious dinner without any of the stress.

  1. Love the article and ideas. I would suggest fresh fruits and veggies and the many wonderful new non-gmo snacks on the market over a can of ANYTHING, especially tuna. The new technology such as the UP Band by jawbone is another wonderful way to track movement.
